Introduction

These terms govern your use of Private Press, developed and published by Keynell LLC. We’ve written them in plain language where possible and with legal precision where it matters. By downloading, installing, or using Private Press, you agree to these terms.

License

Keynell LLC grants you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, non-sublicensable license to use Private Press on macOS
License keys are tied to your purchase tier (Free, Test Pressing, Press Run, or Pro)
Pro licenses allow up to 3 device activations
License keys are delivered via email and activated in the app
You may not reverse engineer, decompile, modify, or redistribute the software

What Private Press Does to Your Files

Private Press modifies metadata in your audio files, including artwork and tags. Artwork-only operations are designed not to modify the encoded audio payload. Operations that relabel metadata change tags and container metadata.

File changes are written to a staged file before Private Press attempts to replace the destination. A failure before replacement leaves the destination in place. A failure during or after replacement may require the app’s recovery state or a retained backup; the app reports the failure so you can review the affected file.

Retained pre-write backups are enabled by default and can be configured or disabled in Settings.

Private Press is a tool for file modification at scale. We recommend familiarizing yourself with how pressing works before running large batch operations.

Your Responsibility

When using Private Press, you are responsible for:

Maintaining independent backups of your music collection. Private Press includes configurable pre-write backups, but they are not a replacement for a separate backup strategy.
Reviewing batch operations and auto-accepted artwork matches before confirming
The accuracy and security of any API credentials or server credentials you provide
Ensuring you have the right to modify the files you process

Third-Party Services

Private Press connects to third-party services for artwork search and other features:

Artwork search results come from third-party providers (iTunes Search API, MusicBrainz / Cover Art Archive, Discogs). Keynell does not control their data accuracy, availability, or terms of service.
Audio identification is processed by Keynell’s Identify service and may use AcoustID for fingerprint matching.
Confidence scores reflect text similarity between your album metadata and the provider’s catalog. They are not a guarantee of correctness.

The software, including all source code, design, and documentation, is the intellectual property of Keynell LLC
The Private Press icon, wordmark, and brand identity are protected marks
Private Press links no external runtime packages. Portions of its audio fingerprinting engine adapt algorithm parameters and the fingerprint encoding format published by the AcoustID/Chromaprint project, used under the MIT license.

Disclaimer of Warranties

Private Press uses staged writes, preflight validation, recovery state, and configurable backups. These safeguards reduce risk but do not guarantee recovery from every failure. Software is complex, collections vary, and no file-modification tool is infallible.

PRIVATE PRESS IS PROVIDED “AS IS” AND “AS AVAILABLE” WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EITHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT. KEYNELL LLC DOES NOT WARRANT THAT THE SOFTWARE WILL BE ERROR-FREE OR UNINTERRUPTED.

Limitation of Liability

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, KEYNELL LLC’S TOTAL LIABILITY FOR ANY CLAIMS ARISING FROM YOUR USE OF PRIVATE PRESS SHALL NOT EXCEED THE AMOUNT YOU PAID FOR THE SOFTWARE.

KEYNELL LLC SHALL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY CONSEQUENTIAL, INCIDENTAL, INDIRECT, SPECIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO DATA LOSS OR CORRUPTION, INCORRECT ARTWORK MATCHES, OR THIRD-PARTY SERVICE OUTAGES OR DATA ERRORS.

Indemnification

You agree to indemnify and hold harmless Keynell LLC from any claims, damages, or expenses arising from your use of Private Press inconsistent with its documentation or these terms.

Changes to These Terms

We may update these terms from time to time. When we do, we’ll update the date at the top of this page. For material changes, we’ll provide notice through the app or on this website. The core commitment — honest engineering, your files stay yours — won’t change.

Governing Law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of California. Any disputes arising from these terms or your use of Private Press shall be resolved in the state and federal courts located in California.
